Poetry in the Praetorium: Legal Eloquence in Prerevolutionary France

My dissertation, “Poetry in the Praetorium: Legal Eloquence in Prerevolutionary France,” interrogates the interlocking concepts of eloquence, law, passion and reason from within French legal culture as these notions were defined by and shifted away from their positions in a theological hierarchy of meaning. Early modern legal practice was a deeply textual activity; pleadings and mémoires judiciaires were embedded within the multiple codes and jurisprudences of Old Regime France. Yet these discourses were also often emplotted according to the received authority of religious texts. The mutual buttressing of positive and religious law had important professional and social implications; lawyers were expected not simply to convince the learned magistrates of one’s claim, but also to persuade the public audience toward virtue. Eloquence thus consisted in the achievement of a hybrid rhetorical task – conviction and persuasion – through which the passions of the people and the reason of the judges would be temporarily in agreement. Central to my re-evaluation of legal eloquence is the consideration of the role of the barrister as the embodiment of judicial imagination within the Old Regime body politic. Imagination, the intermediary element lodged between reason and passion in the theological vision of the soul, was considered to travel between the other two elements, communicating information and obedience between them. Legal eloquence was conceptualized in the same terms. However, as reason and passion were reconceived during the Enlightenment, legal eloquence was repositioned as well, reflecting the shifting ontological commitments of society. The transformations and especially continuities between traditional and prerevolutionary legal eloquence are analyzed in this dissertation through a series of close readings of the works of pivotal legal practitioners from the seventeenth and eighteenth century, such as Pousset de Montauban, Bonaventure de Fourcroy, Servan, Lacretelle, Pastoret, and Robespierre. Their discursive techniques are analyzed first according to their own professional context, and then further elucidated with respect to the tangential culture of letters, with particular reference to Descartes, Montesquieu, and Diderot. By taking a more diachronic and professionally-specific approach, a clearer picture of the political rise of prerevolutionary legal eloquence comes to light

Live donor study – implications of kidney donation on cardiovascular risk with a focus on lipid parameters including lipoprotein a

In this prospective observational cohort study, we evaluate the change in cardiovascular risk parameters, with a focus on lipids, in live kidney donors 1 year post donation. Body mass index, systolic/diastolic blood pressure, kidney function (chromium-51 ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid estimated glomerular filtration) and lipid parameters were measured at baseline and 1 year. Data on 87 live kidney donors were collected. Body mass index increased from 26.5 ± 2.7 pre to 27.4 ± 3.0 kg/m post donation (p < 0.0001). Chromium-51 ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid estimated glomerular filtration decreased from 111.8 ± 20.0 pre to 72.1 ± 13.1 mL/min/1.73 m post donation (p < 0.0001). Serum triglyceride levels increased from 0.8 (interquartile range 0.6–1.3) pre to 1.0 mmol/L (interquartile range 0.7–1.6) post donation (p = 0.0004). Statin use increased from 11.5% pre to 21% post donation (p < 0.005). Low-density lipoprotein remained stable, and other lipids (high-density lipoprotein, apolipoprotein B and lipoprotein a) did not change post donation

Management of Valvular Disease During Pregnancy: Evolving Role of Percutaneous Treatment

    Get PDF
Valvular heart disease (VHD) is encountered in approximately 1% of pregnancies, significantly increasing both maternal and foetal risk. Rheumatic VHD remains the most common form in non-Western countries, whereas congenital heart disease dominates in the Western world. The risk of complications varies according to the type and severity of the underlying VHD. Moreover, pregnancy is a hypercoagulable state associated with increased risk of thromboembolism. The authors review the main VHDs encountered during pregnancy, and suggest management strategies based on the 2018 European Society of Cardiology recommendations for the management of pregnant women with VHD, providing an overview of classical and new transcatheter structural therapeutic options with a special focus on radiation exposure and anticoagulation drug management

Treatment of Heyde’s Syndrome by Aortic Valve Replacement

    Get PDF
Heyde’s syndrome is the association between calcific aortic stenosis and gastrointestinal bleeding due to angiodysplasia. Alterations in von Willebrand factor due to turbulence across the diseased aortic valve have been incriminated in the pathophysiology of this syndrome. Replacement of the aortic valve has been reported to stop the bleeding, but this is debatable. Along with a review of the relevant medical literature, we hereby report a 68 year old patient with aortic stenosis and severe recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding that completely subsided following aortic valve replacement

AIMS Data on sports-related sudden cardiac arrest (SrSCA) among young adults in the general population are scarce. We aimed to determine the overall SrSCA incidence, characteristics, and outcomes in young adults. METHODS AND RESULTS Prospective cohort study of all cases of SrSCA between 2012 and 2019 in Germany and Paris area, France, involving subjects aged 18-35 years. Detection of SrSCA was achieved via multiple sources, including emergency medical services (EMS) reporting and web-based screening of media releases. Cases and aetiologies were centrally adjudicated. Overall, a total of 147 SrSCA (mean age 28.1 ± 4.8 years, 95.2% males) occurred, with an overall burden of 4.77 [95% confidence interval (CI) 2.85-6.68] cases per million-year, including 12 (8.2%) cases in young competitive athletes. While bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was initiated in 114 (82.6%), automated external defibrillator (AED) use by bystanders occurred only in a minority (7.5%). Public AED use prior to EMS arrival (odds ratio 6.25, 95% CI 1.48-43.20, P = 0.02) was the strongest independent predictor of survival at hospital discharge (38.1%). Among cases that benefited from both immediate bystander CPR and AED use, survival rate was 90.9%. Coronary artery disease was the most frequent aetiology (25.8%), mainly through acute coronary syndrome (86.9%). CONCLUSION Sports-related sudden cardiac arrest in the young occurs mainly in recreational male sports participants. Public AED use remains disappointingly low, although survival may reach 90% among those who benefit from both bystander CPR and early defibrillation. Coronary artery disease is the most prevalent cause of SrSCA in young adults
